Sun protection is crucial, but many sunscreens fall short. While they may shield your skin from UVB rays (the ones that cause sunburn), they often fail to offer adequate UVA protection. This is a problem because UVA rays penetrate deeper, contributing to premature aging and even skin cancer. But that’s not all – the bad news extends beyond your skin. The vast majority of sunscreens contain ingredients that are toxic to coral reefs and other marine life. The video linked here (here) offers a compelling look at this issue.
So what’s the answer? Biodegradable sunscreens may seem like a step in the right direction, but they’re not the whole picture. Biodegradable simply means the product will break down over time. However, the breakdown products could still be harmful. What we truly need are “eco-compatible” sunscreens. These sunscreens are designed with the environment in mind, ensuring their ingredients are safe for the ecosystems they come in contact with. To understand the distinction between biodegradable and eco-compatible, this short video (here) provides a clear explanation.
Extensive research has led to the development of an eco-compatible sunscreen. This particular sunscreen, championed by the same marine scientist featured in the previous videos, underwent rigorous testing. Every single ingredient was meticulously analyzed before being included in the final formula. Once the product was finalised, it was subjected to further testing in its totality and given the all clear.
It is ecocompatible and 100% coral safe.
Are we biased? Yes. It is the only sunscreen to have a patent pending and that we know was tested properly because the founders of The Going Blue Foundation also founded Aethic Ltd. – the company that makes and markets it. What’s more, Aethic is not only ecocompatible but also marine positive by virtue of ultra off-setting its only acquatrail, that associated with transport. To implement that ultra off-set, Aethic makes donations to this foundation.
The product is available online from AETHIC.COM and increasingly from leading retailers around the world. Selfridges London among them.
